On Saturday 4th October at The Whitworth we are hosting Darley Dale Town Councils Being Active Being Healthier event from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

About the event

On Saturday 4th October at The Whitworth we are hosting our Being Active Being Healthier event from 11:00am to 3:00pm. 

The event is showcasing a wide variety of ways to be more active. For all ages and abilities with opportunities to have a go!

FOR CHILDREN – Tree climbing, orienteering and a climbing wall outside in the park and hopefully craft work inside. White Hall Outdoor Centre and Acclimbatize.

FOR ADULTS – Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Morris Dancing, Irish Set Dance (maybe) and more!

FOR OLDER PEOPLE – Seated and gentler exercises such as table tennis, seated Zumba and more!

GUIDED WALK @ 11:00amMark Gwynne Jones will do a guided walk around the park reflecting on the Whitworth’s and other local history, plus extracts from ‘Voices from the Peak’. He will be accompanied by JP from A6 Trees to discuss the trees in the park.

INFORMATION STANDS – walking, cycling, skiing, physio, chiropractor, blood pressure, weight loss and more!

HAND REFLEXOLOGY WORKSHOP – If you would like to attend a FREE workshop at 12:15pm on using hand reflexology for self-care or book onto a 1:1 HAND REFLEXOLOGY SESSION – at a reduced cost of £5 then please email sarah.rivett@darleydale.gov.uk as spaces are limited for both the workshop and 1:1 sessions.

12:00pm – 12:45pmProfessor Hardman – Emeritus Professor Loughborough University – Author ‘Physical Activity and Health’Talk: The benefits of even a modest amount of activity

Bio: Loughborough University 1978 to 2001. Contributing to teaching and, increasingly, to research. Research focus is on the role of moderate exercise such as brisk walking on health outcomes, particularly in middle-aged an older people. Topics of interest include changes in fitness, risk factors for cardiovascular disease, measures of body fatness and skeletal integrity.

Research funded by the British Heart Foundation and the National Osteoporosis Society and others. Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

Physical Activity and Health (Hardman and Stensel) explains clearly, systematically and in detail the relationship between physical activity, health and disease, and examines the role of exercise in the prevention and management of a wide range of important conditions.


1:15pm – 2:00pmJuly Styles – Train with SculptTalk: Resistance training and more

Bio: Founder of SCULPT. 10 years industry experience, coaching individuals, groups and mentoring early career personal trainers.

Qualifications: Level 4 in Strength and Conditioning, Women’s Coaching Specialist Certification – GGS 2024, Certificate in Nutrition – Optimum Nutrition for Health and Performance, Level 3 in Personal Training and Gym Instructing.

‘My approach is compassionate and collaborative – grounded in evidence, backed by science and measured with intention’.


2:00pm – 2:45pmDr Amanda Smith – Peak MPSTTalk: Menopause including bone health

Bio: Amanda qualified from University of London. After foundation years in London and Yorkshire, worked in North Derbyshire, initially as a GP, then as a specialist in Community Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare.

Throughout her career, women have sought evidence-based advice and support with all aspects of the significant midlife ‘change’: the menopause. Dr Amanda has over 25 years’ experience of working in menopause clinics such as a British Menopause Society (BMS) Recognised Menopause Expert, having attained their highest level of certification, the Advanced Certificate in the Principles and Practice of Menopause Care.

When North Derbyshire’s NHS Community Menopause service was decommissioned in 2018, Dr Amanda set up ‘Peak MPST’ so she could continue to share her expertise.
