Celebrating VE Day at The Whitworth – A Weekend to Remember

Earlier this month, we stepped back in time to honour VE Day with a weekend of wartime charm, community spirit, and celebration here at The Whitworth.

From the 8th to the 11th of May, our café served up a special VE Day-inspired menu featuring classic favourites like corned beef hash and traditional bread & butter pudding – both of which proved to be a hit with our visitors! It was a lovely way to celebrate heritage through food, and we were delighted to see so many people enjoying these nostalgic dishes.

The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly our VE Day Tea Dance, held on Saturday 10th May in the Brunel Room. The space was brought to life with the sounds of old favourites, a pop-up bar, and a buffet filled with traditional sandwich fillings – including corned beef and even dripping – plus a wonderful selection of homemade cakes lovingly prepared by our café team.

Guests dressed to the nines in vintage attire, and the dance floor was full all afternoon. It was a joyful celebration of community, music, and memory.

We were incredibly proud to host this event, made possible thanks to generous support from Derbyshire Dales District Council and Darley Dale Town Council. As a registered charity, The Whitworth relies on events like these – and the support of our visitors – to keep this special place thriving for generations to come.
